So what is an appropriate philosophy for business recruitment; balance. Cities and regions need both the primary job growth of industrial recruitment and expansion as well the secondary job growth and tax base that the retail sector provides. Quality development is quality development, no matter what sector it may occur in so long as the project meets resident and community stakeholder needs. The economic development profession is full of far too many specialists with too few qualified generalists actually serving communities effectively. A one dimensional approach isn’t economic development, but rather short-sided by both the individual advocating the approach and cities that buy into the philosophy.

For over 40 years the Claremore Industrial and Economic Development Authority (CIEDA) has driven growth throughout the city through development efforts in multiple sectors including retail, industrial, government, office and others. It is very important that as cities begin to see new job growth in the years ahead that we do not lose sight of the great companies already in our cities that have been responsible for our economic health and that will continue to lead us into the future. One hundred years ago, Rogers State University first began on the hill in Claremore as a preparatory school before later becoming Oklahoma Military Academy. RSU is home to over 4,000 students in a wide variety of associates and academic degrees in career fields like Nursing, Business Administration, and Business Information Technology. Today at the 100 hundred year anniversary celebration RSU faculty, administration, and students held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the brand new $13 million Centennial Student Services Center. Centennial Center marks a definable moment in the history of RSU. I was proud to be on hand to celebrate this great moment and look forward to many more days like today on the hill in Claremore. In a recent issue of Economic Development Now, Andy Levine of Development Councillors International concludes that over 64% of site selectors have indicated that they will use a website as part of their next facility search. This statistic represents a transition from asset based economic development to electronic marketing or Economic Development 3.0.

What does this transition mean for economic development organizations? Having a good website is vital to the marketing health of an economic development organization. Levine points out that economic development websites must include information on available incentives, demographics, available buildings & sites. The launch of the new CIEDA website at www.claremoreusa.com in February of 2009 marked a significant milestone for CIEDA. The updated website is becoming the electronic face of CIEDA. Since the beginning of the web marketing efforts CIEDA has developed a LinkedIn network of over 2 million electronic users, a daily Twitter following of over 400 followers, and electronic visibility in over 20 countries. This rapidly growing electronic network will become the platform on which future CIEDA recruitment efforts will be built.
