One Day Without Shoes
A group of teens and young adults recently walked the streets of Claremore barefoot with a cause.
Last month, an annual international event called “One Day Without Shoes” raised awareness for the serious need for shoes for children around the world in developing countries.
In fact, one shoe company takes this mission so seriously, it was founded on the premise that the company will donate one pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair of shoes that is purchased. A local teen, Northeast Technology Center student Kristofer Kotoff, organized the Claremore event as a project in his NTC Environmental & Spatial Technology (EAST) class.
One Day Without Shoes is an annual event in which students, friends, parents, strangers, and co-workers host or join barefoot events. Some go barefoot for an hour, some for the whole day, but all become a part of a greater movement toward change. Several celebrities have also gotten on board with the movement, including a group of college basketball coaches who will coach one game every year barefoot on the bench.
The group from Claremore walked along the sidewalks on SH 88, beginning at NTC’s Claremore campus and winding up downtown. Students, parents, and siblings from Claremore, Claremore-Sequoyah, Rogers State University, NTC, and Locust Grove marched down to raise awareness in the Claremore area. There were about 100 people supporting the cause.
